Is a resin floor sound-absorbing (enough) for comfortable living and working? This question occupies the minds of many private individuals, facility managers and business owners, we can say from experience. You can read the answer here.
Resin floor source of noise nuisance?
Why is it that resin floors are more than once associated with noise nuisance? Traditionally, resin floors were mainly applied in factories, warehouses, car garages and workshops. Places where machines run at full speed, equipment drives in and out and the sound of spinning and humming tools is omnipresent. Where production, driving and tinkering take place, the floor must primarily be functional. The theme of room acoustics for the benefit of rest, relaxation and focus does not play such an important role there.
In these spaces you will mainly find epoxy resin floors. This type of resin floor has a high impact load and chemical resistance, which makes them exceptionally suitable for (heavy) industrial applications. At the same time, epoxy resin floors are also very hard and have little to no sound-absorbing properties, making them less suitable for use in homes and office environments.
PU resin floor is sound-absorbing
But not every resin floor is the same⦠For living and working applications, resin floors of a different resin type are advised: polyurethane (PU). This resin is slightly elastic and gives the floor the necessary shock- and sound-absorbing properties. That same flexibility also increases walking comfort. A PU resin floor feels somewhat soft to the feet, comparable to the (vinyl) floors you often find in gyms.
Can be installed on existing (hard) floors
Another advantage: PU resin floors can also be applied over existing tile floors and wooden floors after some pre-treatments. This way, you immediately improve in terms of sound absorption!
Additional noise reduction with acoustic membrane
By applying an extra acoustic membrane under the resin floor, the sound-absorbing effect can be further increased. With this special resin floor version, up to 15 dB of noise reduction can be achieved. Ideal for homes with young children, offices and apartments where (in connection with VvE regulations) strict requirements apply regarding noise nuisance.
