Resin floor over tiles: is it possible?

We regularly receive the question of whether a resin floor can be applied over tiles. You can read the answer to this question in this blog.

Resin floor and tiles go well together

Let’s get straight to the point: a resin floor over tiles is well possible, both with PU resin floors and cementitious resin floors. The most important advantages and reasons for this:

  • It saves a lot of time, demolition work and dust in the house;
  • In most cases, the current doors do not need to be shortened; a resin floor is generally only 3 to 4 mm thick;
  • A resin floor is thermally insulating, making the room feel more comfortable than with just tiles and keeping it at temperature for longer;
  • Is there already underfloor heating under the tiles? Then this can simply remain in place. This is no unnecessary luxury, because when removing tiles there is a high risk that the underfloor heating will be damaged. Also handy: you can continue to follow the same heating protocol as before. Read more here about the importance of a heating protocol. The advantage of the combination tiles-underfloor heating-resin floor is that the heating efficiency is much higher due to the extra insulation layer that is applied in this way.

Points of attention for resin floor over tiles

Applying a resin floor over tiles remains a specialized task. For instance, it is important at all times that the subfloor is properly level, stable and even. We share the most important points of attention in this area below:

  • Secure any loose tiles well to the subfloor. When there are too many loose tiles, it can be more economical and faster to remove the entire tiled floor before the resin floor is applied;
  • Both existing tiles with (light) relief and fully smooth glazed tiles are mechanically roughened for optimal adhesion;
  • For a sleek result, any height differences between the tiles themselves are ‘leveled out’;
  • Because of the joints between the tiles, a leveling layer is applied anyway to fill the height differences.
