The type of resin floor
The hardness of the type of resin floor defines the crack-bridging character. Thanks to the use of materials, polyurethane resin floors are softer and more elastic than cement-bound resin floors and can therefore better adapt to a somewhat irregular subfloor.
That the risk of cracking is greater with cement-bound resin floors is, moreover, not necessarily objectionable. The formation of hairline cracks reinforces the industrial, unpolished character of the floor.
Pre-treatment of the subfloor
Resin floors adhere to the subfloor, usually sand-cement, anhydrite or concrete. Does the subfloor already show cracks or other irregularities? Then it is very important to pre-treat these well. Otherwise, there is a high risk that the crack size will increase after the resin floor has been applied. When the resin floor can no longer bridge these, ripples or cracks will become visible in the resin floor.
Using a good heating protocol
Do you want to combine the resin floor with underfloor heating? Prevent the floor from working by following a good heating protocol prior to the application. That is to say: bringing the subfloor to temperature gradually and slowly.
Why this is so important? Cracking can occur in the (sub)floor when there are too rapid and large temperature changes. Any problems in the subfloor can be tackled in time, even before applying the resin floor.
Applying a crack-bridging membrane
Do you live in a new-build home and does the floor still need to settle? Are you dealing with dilatations? Or do you just want extra certainty? Then choose to execute the resin floor with a crack-bridging membrane. This is resistant to shrinkage and settlement cracks up to 2.5 mm. This sounds like little, but it is a lot. Cracks due to shrinkage and settlement of more than 2.5 mm only occur with construction errors or natural disasters.
The crack-bridging membrane directly increases the walking comfort, resilience and contact sound reduction of the floor. This latter property can be further improved with wall solutions such as acoustic curtains and acoustic wallpaper.
