Ready for a new floor and facing the choice between a resin floor or wooden floor? Both floors deliver – each in their own way – a beautiful contribution to the interior. Mutually, however, there are quite a few differences. To simplify your choice, we compare both floors in the areas of appearance, user-friendliness and costs.
The appearance
The desired appearance is primarily a matter of taste:
- Are you charmed by the natural character of wood, the lively grains (whether simulated or not) and the characteristic wood tones? Then a wooden floor fits better. Because of their appearance, you mainly see wood floors in rural and classic interiors;
- Do you prefer a sleek, even, seamless and solid appearance? Then a resin floor fits better. Due to these properties, resin floors fit well in industrial and modern interiors.
User-friendliness
In terms of user-friendliness, wooden floors and resin floors differ considerably in the areas of maintenance, sensitivity to damage, repairability and cleanability:
- Resin floors require relatively little maintenance after installation; the floors do not attract dirt and dust. Also, resin floors do not need to be nourished. With wood floors, on the other hand, it is advised to oil the floor once in a while to prevent dullness;
- Resin floors are wear-resistant and water-repellent. Wood floors are sensitive to water damage, but in terms of wear resistance, they are not inferior to resin floors. However, recently commissioned resin floors are more sensitive to cracks than wooden floors, although the risk of cracking is virtually nil with a crack-bridging membrane;
- Do the floors show signs of use over time? To make a resin floor look like new again, it is sufficient in most cases to only replace the top layer. With wood-laminate floors, scratches can usually no longer be removed and the relevant plank(s) must be replaced. Parquet floors can be sanded and revarnished again in case of damage;
- Both resin floors and wood floors are relatively easy to make dust-free, with the difference that dirt can settle between the joints in wood floors. Wet cleaning also deserves special attention. For example, cleaning wood floors too wet can cause the wood to warp, cause stains and encourage mold formation. With resin floors, there is no question of such risks.
The costs
The price for a resin floor differs per quality and provider, but at TREU interior specials it amounts to about €55 to €85 per m2 including application. Conditions apply to these rates. The all-in prices for a wood-laminate floor start from €20 per m2 and can run up to more than €100 per m2 for the more exclusive project parquet floors. With wood floors, the laying pattern influences the price. For example, a herringbone or Hungarian point execution is much more labor-intensive than a straight plank floor.
In the long term, you are usually cheaper off with a resin floor because of the significantly longer lifespan.
The conclusion
Whoever likes the warm and lively character of wood and has a laying pattern in mind, ends up with a wood floor. Do you also want to enjoy waterproof properties and simple cleaning? Then a PVC floor in a wood look indistinguishable from real is a good alternative!
