Wondering how we will ring in this new decade? In this article, we update you on the five most important trends in the field of interior design. For instance, a major role is reserved for textiles, we go wild with prints, and we discover new techniques such as digital printing and 3D weaving.
Back in style: the carpet
Textiles play the leading role in our interiors. In fact, we are going to surround ourselves with them. The return of the wall hanging proves that carpets are not just for the floor. It can be used as an accent, but why not cover the entire wall with carpet? We see solid-colored carpets, coarsely woven pieces with loose fringes, and carpets with (graphic) prints.
Living like royalty
Textiles will play a major role in the coming period. Preferably in a luxury version. Fabrics such as velvet, jacquard weaves, and corduroy are widely seen. Many pieces of furniture are upholstered with them. And how about corduroy cushions or velvet curtains, for example? This way, you can create a royal atmosphere in no time.
Go wild with prints
Graphic, organic, bold, or even minimalist. Prints are everywhere! Both on textiles and on sheet material. Mixing is allowed, even encouraged! An ideal surface for prints is, of course, wallpaper. This can be used to create depth that doesn’t actually exist. For example, through wallpaper with a perspective effect. Digital printing offers a solution here, more on which below.
Digital revolution
Carpets, wallpaper, curtains… In fact, digital printing can be done on any surface you can imagine. Not only is the quality high, it is also better for the environment than regular printing. The design is sent to the printer by the computer in one go. Instead of mass production, items are only produced when there is direct demand. Ideal for small runs.
The new weaving
We see many complex weaves, often with loose fringes. 3D weaves are also popular; take, for example, the ‘Fringes & Floats’ project by design studio Alissa+Nienke. The project is a collaboration with EE Exclusives, a company specializing in jacquard weaving. Research into the technical possibilities of jacquard machines resulted in a collection of woven fabrics that can be used as wall coverings, for example.
