And which materials? For anyone who can’t see the wood for the trees, here are the various options at a glance. <\/p>\n
Let’s start with the different printing techniques, beginning with screen printing. This technique is hundreds of years old but is still widely used. Screen printing uses a stencil in which the pattern is, so to speak, cut out. Dyes are then added, and the stencil only allows dye through in the right places, creating a pattern on the surface. <\/p>\n
The number of colors in the pattern equals the number of rollers required. As a result, it is not always possible to achieve a complex pattern with screen printing. It is also quite labor-intensive compared to other printing techniques. Consequently, large print runs can become costly. <\/p>\n

Another printing technique that is also more suitable for small runs is sublimation, also known as transfer printing. You might remember it from the past, when you used transfer paper from a bookstore or craft shop to put your own print on a T-shirt. Although on a much larger scale, this technique is widely used for printing curtains, for example. First, the pattern is printed on paper, then it is heated and pressed onto the fabric, creating a pattern. Advantages of this technique include high color fastness, photo quality, and many design possibilities. <\/p>\n

<\/h2>\nThen there is a relatively new technique: digital printing. With this technique, the design is sent directly from the computer to the printer. It can be printed on almost any material, from cork to plastic and from wood to metal. <\/p>\n
One advantage of digital printing is that photorealistic printing is possible. Multiple patterns can also be printed side by side, making the technique suitable for small runs. Furthermore, digital printing is more environmentally friendly than traditional printing techniques. This is partly because no printing plates need to be replaced, as is the case with traditional methods. <\/p>\n

A pattern is not only achieved by printing on fabric; weaving is, of course, another way to create designs. Weaving is a combination of warp threads (lengthwise) and weft threads (widthwise). Together, these threads form a weave, a sturdy construction that lasts a long time. From wool to plastic, anything is possible. Below are various options. <\/p>\n

In woven carpets, the yarns are often pre-dyed, allowing for more precise color determination. A specific color is chosen as the base, which becomes the warp thread. The other colors are woven through it, creating a pattern. <\/p>\n
A pattern can also be created by mixing different carpet techniques, known as ‘level cut loop’. Part of the carpet consists of loops (called boucl\u00e9) and another part consists of cut yarns that are only attached to the bottom of the carpet. By combining these techniques, a pattern is formed. <\/p>\n
A third way to create a pattern with carpet is by playing with carpet tiles in different shapes and colors. By combining various tiles, a unique design is easily created. This technique is naturally suitable for floors but can also be applied to walls. <\/p>\n
Looking for a luxurious appearance? Then jacquard is a great option. Using a special jacquard loom, a pattern can be woven into the fabric. If bronze, silver, or gold thread is incorporated, it is called brocade. Jacquard has the advantage that intricate patterns can be woven. Furthermore, the result is very colorfast, more so than a pattern printed on fabric. <\/p>\n
